Vine Maple most commonly grows as a large shrub to around 15-30 feet tall, but it will occasionally form a small to medium-sized tree. It is an attractive specimen in all seasons: bare reddish twigs in winter, pretty red-and-cream flowers, delicate lobed leaves in spring and summer, turning to red in autumn. It is native to moist woods and streambanks in the coastal mountains of northern California. A wonderful choice in the woodland setting under tall conifers where its fall color will stand out. A natural with ferns and other woodland plants that receive dappled to part shade. It is deciduous and needs some moisture but should not be irrigated once established.
