An evergreen shrub with dense foliage of spear-shaped leaves. New foliage is tinged salmon-pink. Flowers are bright yellow cup-shaped appearing in spring followed by reddish to dark blue berries. With its spiny-toothed dense foliage, it can serve as a barrier hedge. Nevin’s barberry is a California endangered plant species.
Mature size is normally about 5–6 feet but it can get larger. It is drought tolerant and prefers sandy to gravelly, well-drained soils. Deer resistant.
