NOTE: We are selling bulbs, not plants. One order consists of 3 bulbs. Planting instructions included.
This showy mariposa lily is found on coastal prairie, grasslands and some open forest floors. Like other mariposa lilies, it grows from a bulb with most of its growth occurring in winter, followed by spring flowering and summer dormancy. In early winter, grass like leaves emerge from the soil, followed by the butterfly-favored blossoms in late spring and early summer. The flower is about 2 inches across, primarily bright yellow with sparse hair inside and often with reddish brown markings at the base of each of the three petals.
Once the flowers are done, the bulbs will go dormant. Plant in full sun to light shade with well-draining soil. Allow them to go completely dry in the summer. The bulbs will multiply over time. Calochortus luteus is reported to be one of the easiest of the mariposa lilies to grow in gardens.
These bulbs were grown from seed by a local grower and are 5 years old.
