Carpenteria californica, Bush Anemone

Out of stock

Long in cultivation, this native evergreen shrub is rare in the wild, with a limited distribution in its native habitat. It forms a multi-branched shrub, 5 to 7 foot tall or more and nearly as wide, with dark green, leathery leaves that provide a dark foil to the brilliant white flowers. Late spring brings terminal clusters of white, 2 to 3 inch, sweetly scented, anemone-like blossoms with yellow centers. The blooms have a pleasant fragrance and are attractive to bees and butterflies.

Bush Anemone is easy to grow and adapts to a variety of soil types, as long as the soil is well-draining. It grows in full sun or part shade and tolerates low to moderate moisture. Pruning the stems after flowering improves this shrub’s appearance. Unruly plants can be cut back to ground level (coppiced) to produce new growth from the stump. An adaptable shrub that makes a striking specimen or foundation plant in a woodland area. Responds well to pruning; Drought tolerant but appreciates occasional summer water.
