A horticultural selection from Ceanothus gloriosus var. gloriosus in Mendocino County. Anchor Bay Lilac is an evergreen shrub groundcover, making a very dense, low-growing and spreading selection about 2 ft tall and 5–6 ft wide. It has darker blue flowers than the species; they appear like blue cotton balls all along its elegant branches. It stays very neat and its long branches will drape nicely over boulders or retaining walls. Despite its north coast origins it has done well in an interior garden which gets very hot in summer and well below 2 F in winter. It has fast become a favorite groundcover lilac. It becomes alleopathic over time which will help to keep out weeds.
