Mountain Mahogany is a distinctive-looking evergreen shrub that provides visual interest all year. It is named for its dark bark color. The birch-like leaves have edges that are smooth at the bottom and toothed at the top. In late winter and spring, its small creamy yellow flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies. In autumn, it will be covered in long, fuzzy seeds that resemble curled feathers and shine in the sun.
Plant in full sun to part shade and water 1x a month once established. This shrub has a tall, upright habit and a fast growth rate, generally reaching 8–12 ft tall but it can get larger. Because of the upright form, it is often used in narrow areas and as a hedge or privacy screen. It responds well to light or heavy pruning, which may be necessary when planted in small spaces. It can also be cut down to the ground for new growth. Deer tend to browse this plant so some protection may be necessary.
It’s a low-water plant and adapts to a variety of soil types. Mountain Mahogany is notable for its extensive root system and is often used for restoration and bank stabilization. Host plant for several dozen butterfly species.
