California fuchsia has soft gray-green foliage that contrasts beautifully in this case with the pink flowers, creating quite a show in late summer and fall. The plant requires good drainage, full sun, and very little water once established. It will spread by rhizomes, colonizing an area and mingling with other perennial and shrubs. It is an important late-summer hummingbird food source. Butterflies and bees also visit the flowers. Cut back plants to 6 inches high in winter to invigorate next year’s new growth.
It tends to grow on dry slopes but is very adaptable to gardens. Feathery gray-green leaves. Spreads to form mat and gets up to 2 feet tall. Winter Semi-Deciduous. Tolerates clay and sand. This variety was supposedly found on Mt Burdell in Marin County.
