Eschscholzia californica var. maritima, Coastal Form California Poppy

This variety differs from our state flower in that the flowers are yellow with an orange center and the plant is a perennial, not an annual. The clump of basal foliage tends to stay small, at most a foot high. California poppies like fast draining soil.

This is a coastal plant where it thrives in full sun. Further inland it will need part shade. The flowers appear from February to September, though primarily in spring. Birds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators are attracted to this plant. Rabbits may browse the leaves but it is deer resistant.
