The San Bruno Mt. Coffeeberry is a small, low growing evergreen shrub that has stunning red twigs and bark, offset by intense green foliage. This shrub is a cultivar from the San Bruno Mountain area and is ideal for small 5′ x 5′ cool spaces in the garden or hedge. The yellow flowers are not particularly showy but are loved by pollinators, especially bees.
San Bruno requires minimal water and is less tolerant of heat and drought than other varieties of coffeeberry. The shrub flowers in the mid to late spring, followed by berries fading from bright red to black in the fall which will be eaten by birds such as thrushes, jays, mockingbirds and robins. It grows best in sandy, coarse-grained or other fast draining soil and prefers sun or part shade in coastal sites, and part shade or shade in inland sites.
