Helenium puberulum is known by the common name rosilla. A charming plant when in bloom with bright yellow “balls” of florets with a narrow petal “collar” underneath. Great as cut flowers, either fresh or when dried. Centers turn brown over time.
Native to California and Baja California, it can be found in moist habitats such as riverbanks and meadows. This perennial herb varies in size and shape from a low plant about 2.5 feet high to stems nearing 5 feet tall. Most of the leaves are on the lower part of the plant. It takes full sun to light shade and moderate water—a good plant for irrigated beds. Goldfinches love the seeds.
