Limnanthes alba, White Meadowfoam

Out of stock

The familiar local meadowfoam, Limnanthes douglasii, brightens our hillsides from March to July with bright yellow blossoms that have white tips on the petals. Limnanthes alba differs from Limnanthes douglasii in having all-white blossoms. Otherwise, the two plants are alike and grow under the same conditions.

Meadowfoam is the perfect annual wildflower for damp spots in the garden. A rosette of low growing, shiny green foliage is topped with a profusion of flowers. In a meadow it can be 24” tall but in open spaces it is likely to be 6–12” tall. It is an excellent choice for low, winter wet areas, drainage swales, retention basins or seasonally dry stream beds. It thrives in poorly draining soils where it often naturalizes. Plant in full sun or light shade with regular water through the growing season. Makes a fabulous container plant, too. Meadowfoam is excellent for encouraging native pollinators, bees and butterflies, and attracts hoverflies to the garden to provide natural aphid control. Known for its unique growth habits and inviting fragrance, it has become a favorite among gardeners. Will reseed.
