Annual Meadowfoam occurs in grasslands and vernal pools throughout California. Low growing, shiny green foliage is topped with a profusion of sweetly fragrant, cup shaped, bright yellow blossoms with white tips from March to July. In a meadow it can be 24” tall but in open spaces it is much lower in height. It is an excellent choice for low, winter wet areas, drainage swales, retention basins or seasonally dry stream beds. Thrives in heavy soils where it often naturalizes. Plant in full sun with regular water through the growing season. Makes a fabulous container plant too. Meadowfoam is excellent for encouraging native pollinators, bees and butterflies, and attracts hoverflies to the garden that provide natural aphid control. It is self-seeding so be careful as to where the seeds fall as it will quite happily grow in a lawn.
