Valley Lupine is a broadleaf semi-evergreen annual or biennial that grows in open or disturbed or recently burned places. It is often found in meadows. It takes sun and regular or low water and thrives in average or well-drained soil.
The plant is likely to stay about a foot high but can reach 30” in the right conditions. It sends up flowering stalks in spring with whorls of lavender-pink and white or sometimes bluish blooms. As with most lupines, it reseeds generously. Following a fire, it may put on a beautiful floral display. Deer do browse lupines and the small seedlings may be eaten by snails.
