Serpentine Coyote Mint is a locally rare and more refined version of our common perennial coyote mint, often with darker flowers, colored raspberry-purple. It looks like a cluster of tiny, deep-purple fireworks exploding from a compact base of aromatic foliage. It is native to the mountains of northern California where it grows in chaparral and forest. It loves rocky, well-draining soil and is often found clinging to rocky slopes. While native to serpentine soils, it does well in most soils with good drainage.
Mature plants typically stay under a foot tall but will get a little wider. Leaves are narrow and dark green. Plant in part sun to part or full shade and water infrequently. Once established, it is incredibly water-wise. A great, rarely offered native for rock gardens or smaller areas, where butterflies and bees will enjoy the summer blossoms. Its strong scent usually acts as a natural deterrent for deer and rabbits.
