Muhlenbergia rigens, Deergrass

A great natural habitat that attracts birds and wildlife, this evergreen perennial bunchgrass belongs in every habitat garden. Creates a dense mound of basal foliage about 3 ft tall, with striking 4 to 5-foot seedheads above the foliage.

Prefers full sun or part shade. Can handle summer water up to once per week but once it’s mature, it really doesn’t need any supplementary water. Prefers sandy or gravelly soils, or almost any soil as long as it drains. If it’s looking shaggy after a while, cut back in late winter or early spring. Deer won’t eat it, but they like to lay among the mounds.
