Author: Marin Chapter, California Native Plant Society
Point Reyes National Seashore is one of the jewels of the California Floristic Province, and one of 25 regions of the world with the highest biological diversity. The Point Reyes peninsula is geologically separated from the rest of Marin County by a rift zone of the San Andreas Fault. As wildland habitat is lost elsewhere in California, the importance of the Point Reyes Peninsula as a protected area with notable botanical diversity increases. Unique geology, soils, and climate conditions make for a highly variable landscape within a relatively small land base.
The Marin chapter of CNPS has assembled and updated this complete list of plants known to be found there, both native and nonnative, to aid botanists and amateur explorers alike in learning about and enjoying the complex diversity of this exceptional ecosystem. The 44-page booklet contains a complete listing of over 900 species of vascular plants—about 15% of the California flora, as well as descriptions and plant lists for 7 relevant plant communities of the peninsula.
