Winnifred Gilman Cleveland Sage is a popular selection of Cleveland Sage which does better than the straight species under garden conditions. This shrub grows best in sandy, coarse-grained, or other fast-draining soil, making a shapely 3–4 ft tall by 4–6 ft wide mound. It prefers sun in coastal sites, sun or part shade inland. Can survive on very little irrigation but more attractive if given an occasional deep watering.
Vibrant blue-purple flowers spaced along the length of the flower stalk attract hummingbirds. Both foliage and flowers are aromatic. Plant in well-drained flats, bluffs or on gentle slopes. Great plant to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Deer should ignore it. Introduced by Strybing Arboretum (now San Francisco Botanic Garden).
