California Goldenrod tends to grow in open grassy places, at elevations up to 7,500 feet. It produces plumes with masses of yellow flowers in fall when many other plants are dormant. Birds and pollinating insects love this plant. Grows well in central oak woodlands. It likes to be wet in winter/spring and dry in summer but can take extra water. Great companion plant with California Fuchsia (Epilobium canum) and Pacific Aster (Symphyotrichum chilense), and an important plant for several dozen species of moths and butterflies.
A perfect plant for a meadow, it spreads from a creeping rootstock, so plant it where you don’t mind it intermingling and it will have plenty of room. Otherwise it is very garden tolerant and easy. It will die back in fall to bare stems.
